Date: 03 December 2006 17:55 GREEN, GREEN BUS TO ROAM - FOR FREE The latest in environmentally friendly buses is providing a free service in Cambridge City Centre from today Monday, November 27. Not only is the bus green in colour but in nature too - using the newest and environmentally friendly engines on the market. The Cambridgeshire County Council funded City Circle Service, operated by Stagecoach, is powered by the Euro IV diesel engine which came onto the market last month. It re-uses exhaust gases and removes heavy particles out of the fumes to make sure the emissions are low. The free service is a specially designed low floor mini bus, to improve access for all, and has seats for 27 passengers. It provides a 15 minute frequency on a circular route linking the Grafton Centre via Emmanuel Street through to Market Square and the historic City Centre. The service was first introduced to transport passengers who may have found it difficult to walk between the various shopping areas. Cambridgeshire County Councillor John Reynolds, said: "This service is very popular and we hope by working closely with Stagecoach it will improve even further. Reducing pollution, especially in the City Centre, is an important goal for Cambridgeshire County Council. We hope this new bus will not only help to reduce pollution but encourage more people to try public transport, especially as this service is free and easy to use." Andy Campbell, Managing Director for Stagecoach, said: "Stagecoach has chosen Cambridge to test the new Euro IV engine. The County is well known for its investment in public transport and we want to provide customers with the best services we can. This new bus with its> distinctive new green livery should hopefully prove very popular." Cambridgeshire is one of the few counties in the country which is bucking national trends by increasing bus passengers. John Reynolds
