Date: 16 November 2006 20:47 This week the County has been the target of a number of Distraction Burglaries, please be on your guard and look for the elderly. Please note item below. The main phrase they are using is "we are from the waterboard Distraction burglaries I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS TIME TO POINT OUT THAT IF YOU RECEIVE A BOGUS CALLER AT YOUR DOOR AND YOU SUSPECT THEY ARE NOT WHOM THEY SAY, THEN PLEASE REPORT:- THE INCIDENT STRAI GHT AWAY AS THE NEXT VICTIM MAY NOT BE SO ALERT. I DO STRESS THE WORD STRAIGHT AWAY. WE ARE STILL RECEIVING REPORTS OF THE PUBLIC LETTING PEOPLE INTO THEIR HOMES WITHOUT VERIFYING THEIR TRUE IDENTITY. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY APPEARANCES. AS THE OLD SAYING SAYS " APPEARANCES CAN BE DECEPTIVE." THESE PEOPLE ARE CON ARTISTS AND THEY ACHIEVE THEIR RESULTS BY BEING PLAUSIBLE. PLEASE TRY AND NOTE THEIR DESCRIPTION AND THE GUISE THEY ARE USING TO GAIN ENTRY. IF YOU SEE THEM WITH A CAR AS I HAVE SAID SO OFTEN TRY AND OBTAIN THE REGISTRATION NUMBER AS THIS WOULD BE A BIG PLUS IN HELPING THE POLICE. REMEMBER Now that the dark nights are here you should bear the following in mind! When going out to work in the morning try and leave a light on, Preferably on a timer. Thieves would think twice about entering a house, which may be occupied or gives the appearance obeing so. What to do before Winter driving It is always better, and cheaper, to stop problems before they happen. Before winter comes, there are things you can do now to get ready for bad weather: ANTI-FREEZE: add anti -freeze to the radiator of your car. Also to help keep your windscreen clean, add a witer additive to your windscreen wash. BATTERY: keep your battery fully charged. SERVICE: make sure your car has had a service and is well maintained. LIGHTS: make sure that all lights are working. TYRES: your tyres should have the correct amount of air in them, and should have plenty of tread depth. WIPERS: change the blades on your windscreen wipers if they are worn. WINDOWS: clear your windows and mirrorsso that it is easier to see out. The glare of the low winter sun can make it difficult to see through any windscreens. EMERGENCY PACK: keep this in the back of your car. EMERGENCY PACK CONTENTS: Ice scraper and de-icer; torch; warm clothes and blanket; food and drink; boots; first aid kit; battery jump leads; spade (to dig your car out of snow).
