To help celebrate there will be a free pack of Bookstart "goodies" available for all pre-school children visiting a county library on the day. Children will also be invited, in a selection of libraries, to join in a "bear hunt" for the chance of winning their very own Bookstart bear. During the day, parents and carers will also be able to pick up information on the Cambridgeshire Bookstart Scheme which is part of the national programme designed to provide families with the opportunity to enjoy books together. To support children in developing a love of books from the earliest age possible the Bookstart scheme provides 3 book-based gifts which are: * The Bookstart Bag for babies from 0-12 months * The Bookstart Plus Satchel for toddlers from 24-35 months * The Bookstart Treasure Chest for pre-schoolers from 36-48 months Each gift contains two books that are specially tailored to suit the development of the child as well as some ideas and top tips for parents and carers on how best to share books with children. The book packs are widely distributed free of charge by Health Visitors, Pre-Schools, Nurseries and Childminders as well as being available at any one of the county libraries. For children between 0-4 years visiting the library on National Bookstart day there will also be the opportunity to join the Bookstart Bookcrawl. On becoming a member of the library the child will receive his/her very own library card as well as a Bookstart Bear sticker collectors card. For each library visit the child will continue to receive a sticker and for every 5 stickers collected a certificate will be awarded. There are 10 limited edition certificates to collect. We are delighted to again be hosting National Bookstart Day, and take pride in the libraries providing key outlets for the book packs as well as points of contact for all enquiries about the scheme. It is hoped that the Bookstart initiatives will continue to encourage many young children to become lifelong library users. A similar Bookstart day was held last year, and was very well received by children, parents and carers alike. Bookstart is another example of the increasing services available to our library users.
