Remember to bring your own bag. Thousands of tonnes of garden waste are produced in the county every year and if they are sent to landfill, they will decompose and create methane, one of the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. Almost 65,000 tonnes of garden and food waste were turned into compost last year in Cambridgeshire - that's almost a quarter of the total waste producedin the county. Victor Perez, Waste Campaigns Officer for Cambridgeshire County Council, said "Compost Awareness Week is a fantastic opportunity to remind residents of the environmental benefits but also economic savings that home composting has. When you deal with your garden waste, fruit and vegetable peelings athome, the air emissions associated with transport of that waste are eliminated - contributing to prevent global warming. Residents also benefit directly from their DIY composting, as compost will help their flowers and vegetables grow better - at virtually no cost!"
