The improvements are part of Stage Four of the Cambridge Core Traffic Scheme, which looks to improve public transport, safety, road and footway surfaces in the area and to reduce pollution in the city centre. Providing that work planned for this weekend as part of the Grand Arcade development is completed Cambridgeshire County Council's work in St Andrew's Street will be able to start on Monday 28th January. If not the works will start a week later. Works will be carried out in the area to change the lay-out of the current bus stops to make more space available for buses, provide new shelters and to raise the kerbs to make access to buses easier. Both carriageways and footpaths will be refurbished as part of the works. The temporary changes effect passengers who get on and off their buses at the existing stops outside the Old Robert Sayle building in St Andrew's Street. The services affected when work gets underway include Citi 1 & 2, Stagecoach services 16 & 17 and the Newmarket Road to Madingley Road-Park & Ride service. Citi 1 services currently pick up and set down passengers from Stop 0 in St. Andrews Street - this will move to a new temporary stop outside the new John Lewis store further along St Andrew's Street. Citi 2 services and Park & Ride buses travelling from Newmarket Road and those travelling to Madingley Road Park & Ride site will drop off and pick passengers up from a temporary stop at the front of the existing taxi rank on St. Andrew's Street by the junction with Hobson Street and Sidney Street. Stagecoach services 16 & 17 which currently use one of the affected St Andrew's Street stops will be running from stop E in Emmanuel Street from Monday. Brian Stinton, Project Manager for Cambridgeshire County Council said: "We have to coordinate our work with that still to be undertaken on the Grand Arcade. But it is our aim to complete work along this side of the St. Andrew's Street ahead of their opening and to achieve this we need to start the highway works as soon as possible. We would like to apologise for any disruption caused whilst these works are underway and would like to assure all city centre users that we will be working as quickly as possible to reopen the affected stops along St Andrew's Street. I would also like to reassure city centre users that pedestrian access to properties along St Andrew's Street will be maintained during the works. When the stops reopen the area will have been remodelled to provide better stops with shelters and raised kerbs to allow easier boarding and alighting." Stage 4 of the Core Traffic Scheme includes a wide range of proposals designed to improve bus services, reduce congestion, improve safety and enhance the environment in Drummer Street, Emmanuel Street and St Andrew's Street. Reducing traffic congestion and improving bus services will help to reduce pollution and preserve the unique character of our historic centre and are key goals of Cambridgeshire County Council.
